KeNHA has ordered all traders operating along the Thika Superhighway to clear their goods within seven days

Traffic change is finally coming to one of Nairobi’s busiest roads. The decision marks a major step toward restoring order on the fast-moving highway. It also opens the door for long-awaited public transport upgrades.

The affected sections include Roysambu in both directions and Githurai on the Nairobi-bound side. These areas have grown crowded over time. Hawkers, kiosks, and parked vehicles have slowly eaten into the road space. As a result, traffic lanes have narrowed. Movement has slowed.

Matatus have also made the problem worse. They stop anywhere to pick passengers. They block lanes. They cause sudden braking. Therefore, long traffic lines form. Accidents also become more likely.

Now KeNHA wants to change this pattern.

The authority plans to build modern bus bays. These will give public vehicles proper places to stop. Drivers will move out of active lanes. Passengers will board more safely. Traffic will flow better.

At the same time, road safety will improve. Clearer lanes will reduce collisions. Better visibility will help drivers. Pedestrians will also benefit. They will no longer wait for vehicles on the highway.

This project is part of a wider transport plan. KeNHA aims to make major roads safer and more efficient. Thika Road remains a key focus. It carries thousands of vehicles each day. Even small delays create huge problems.

By clearing the road reserve, the agency creates space for smarter design. That space allows better traffic control. It also prepares the highway for future growth.

However, the move affects many traders. Some rely on the roadside for income. Still, officials say the road must serve transport first. Public safety comes before business.

Traders have been urged to cooperate. They have one week to remove their goods. Those who ignore the notice may face enforcement action.

Transport experts support the move. They say bus bays will reduce chaos. They will also cut fuel waste from idling vehicles.

In the end, smoother traffic benefits everyone. Commuters save time. Drivers avoid stress. Fewer crashes save lives.

As Nairobi keeps growing, its roads must adapt. Thika Superhighway is now taking a clear step toward a safer and more organised future.
