Kenya and Qatar have agreed to strengthen their economic and diplomatic ties. President William Ruto met His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, in Doha on Tuesday. The talks took place during the Second World Summit for Social Development. They focused on boosting investment, expanding trade 
The leaders pledged to increase Qatar’s investment in Kenya. Key sectors include agriculture, infrastructure, and financial partnerships. A major highlight was Qatar’s support for Kenya’s mega-dam programme. The project aims to irrigate nearly two million acres. It will also improve food security and boost agricultural productivity.
They discussed using Kenya’s upcoming Sovereign Wealth Fund and National Infrastructure Fund. These funds will channel capital into large-scale national projects. They are expected to drive economic growth and attract long-term investment.
In aviation, both sides reaffirmed the partnership between Kenya Airways and Qatar Airways. They plan to strengthen operations, expand flight routes and promote tourism and trade. The collaboration will also boost people-to-people connections.
The leaders also focused on regional peace and security. They agreed to coordinate diplomatic efforts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kenya’s leadership in the East African Community and Qatar’s role in international mediation will support these efforts.
President Ruto said the partnership aligns with Kenya’s strategy to attract strategic investment and promote stability. The Emir of Qatar highlighted his country’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s development agenda. Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
The meeting marks a major step in Kenya-Qatar relations. Joint initiatives in agriculture, infrastructure, aviation and peacebuilding are expected to bring long-term benefits. The partnership reflects a shared vision for economic growth, regional stability and prosperity in East Africa and beyond.
