“Kenya Draws Inspiration from Malaysia”: Ruto Hosts Historic Visit, Announces New Trade and Tech Deals

President William Ruto welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Nairobi for a rare and historic state visit. It was the first visit by a Malaysian Prime Minister in almost 20 years. It also came as Kenya marked 60 years of diplomatic ties with Malaysia. The two leaders used the moment to strengthen their friendship and set a new direction for deeper cooperation.

They agreed to upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership. The move will give their cooperation more structure and clear goals. They also committed to removing tariff and non-tariff barriers. The decision will help Kenya expand exports like tea, coffee, flowers, avocados, beef and titanium ores. Kenya currently imports edible oils, electronics, chemicals and rubber from Malaysia. Both leaders noted that the trade balance shows great room for growth.

The meeting ended with the signing of several key agreements. One was a Bilateral Air Services Agreement to ease travel and expand trade and tourism. Another was an MoU on tourism cooperation. They also signed a Letter of Intent to twin Nairobi and Kuala Lumpur. The agreement will enable collaboration on urban planning, technology and service delivery. In addition, the Chambers of Commerce from both countries signed an MoU to boost private-sector partnerships.

Ruto and Anwar also discussed technology and industrial growth. Malaysia agreed to support Kenya’s semiconductor ambitions. Kimathi University was highlighted as a leader in this field. Both countries will also explore cooperation in STEM, research and innovation. Ruto invited Malaysian companies to invest in Kenya’s PPP projects, including roads, power generation and dam construction. He said Kenya is ready to serve as a manufacturing hub for the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The two leaders also exchanged views on peace, security, and global reforms. They supported Africa’s push for two permanent seats on the UN Security Council. Ruto praised Malaysia for backing the expansion of the UN Office in Nairobi. He said Africa deserves fair treatment in global finance and development.

Ruto described the visit as timely and inspiring. He said Kenya will draw lessons from Malaysia’s disciplined rise. He added that both nations share a belief in ambition, excellence and shared prosperity.
