Kenya Mourns Kiambati wa Njora, Last Surviving Mau Mau General Who Led the Fight for Independence, Dies Peacefully at 106

Kenya has lost one of its historic freedom fighters. Kiambati wa Njora, the last surviving member of the 12 Mau Mau generals who led the armed struggle against British colonial rule, died at 106. His family said he passed away on Tuesday at his home in Ngorika, Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.

His son, Maina Kiambati, said his father died of old age. The body was moved to Umash Funeral Home in Nakuru. Funeral arrangements are underway to honor his life and legacy.

Kiambati played a key role in the Mau Mau uprising. His operations were mainly based in Nyandarua. He coordinated attacks against colonial forces and guided fellow fighters. Over time, he became a symbol of courage and resistance in Kenya’s fight for independence.

Even in his later years, Kiambati spoke out for other veterans. He highlighted the hardships faced by some freedom fighters. He called for recognition, support, and better care for those who had sacrificed for the country. His advocacy drew attention to the struggles of elderly veterans living in poverty.

Family members said Kiambati spent quality time with children and grandchildren recently. On Saturday, he attended a memorial service for a grandchild who had passed away ten years ago. He remained engaged with family, showing warmth and dedication even in his advanced age.

His death marks the end of an era. As the last surviving Mau Mau general, he was a living link to Kenya’s liberation history. Leaders and citizens are reflecting on his contributions. Kiambati’s life exemplified bravery, service, and commitment to freedom. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Kenyans who value courage, justice, and national pride.
