All basic schools across Kenya will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2026. This marks the start of Term One after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed the reopening. He also announced the release of Ksh.44,245,066,500.85 as capitation for the term.

The funds are spread across different education levels. Free Primary Education received Ksh.3.7 billion. Free Day Junior School Education got Ksh.14.5 billion. Free Day Secondary Education received the largest share of Ksh.26.1 billion. CS Ogamba said the capitation will ensure schools operate smoothly. He urged principals to use the funds wisely and responsibly.
“School heads must ensure proper use of these resources for learners. No extra levies or fees should be charged. The Ministry will act against misuse,” CS Ogamba said. Field officers under Regional and County Directors will monitor compliance as schools reopen.
For students moving to senior school, the Ministry completed the first Grade 10 placement revision on December 29, 2025. Joining instructions have been available on the placement portal since December 30. Grade 10 learners will report to their senior schools starting January 12, 2026. An additional review window runs from January 6 to January 9 for learners seeking reconsideration of placements. Schools must submit requests with valid reasons.
CS Ogamba also confirmed that learner fees remain unchanged. The government will continue providing capitation at Ksh.22,244 per learner per year. He warned schools against imposing extra fees. The Ministry will act decisively against misuse or mismanagement of funds.
The announcement ensures a structured start to the 2026 school year. Oversight mechanisms are in place to protect learners’ access to education. Public funds must be used efficiently for the benefit of all students.
