Kenya has officially paid KSh 3.9 billion as its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting fee, ending uncertainty that had surrounded the process. The confirmation by the Sports Ministry signals that the country is now firmly on track to co-host the 2027 tournament. The payment clears a key hurdle required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the government has now satisfied all conditions set by CAF. “Kenya has fully met its financial and institutional obligations to CAF, marking a decisive step toward co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” he stated. His remarks underline the government’s intention to stay on course with preparations.
Attention is now shifting to organization and delivery. The Multi-Agency Local Organizing Committee has been restructured to bring in a mix of skills from both public and private sectors. There are also indications of leadership changes within the committee, although no official communication has been released regarding the reported exit of CEO Mike Rabar.
Following a recent CAF inspection, Kenya is entering a more intense preparation phase. Key projects include upgrading stadiums, improving training grounds, and enhancing transport systems. These steps are expected to meet international standards and ensure smooth operations during the tournament.
Mvurya noted that hosting AFCON goes beyond football. He said the tournament presents opportunities for economic expansion, job creation, and youth involvement across different sectors. “We are leveraging this tournament for economic growth, youth empowerment, and job creation,” he added.
Kenya is also working closely with regional partners under the Pamoja bid. Upcoming meetings will focus on aligning visa processes and customs systems to ease movement for visitors.
With the financial commitment now settled, the country’s focus is clear; deliver a successful and memorable AFCON in 2027 while showcasing its potential on the global stage.
