Kenyan Officers Return Home After Critical Mission in Haiti

The second group of Kenyan officers deployed to Haiti under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission arrived back in Kenya on Tuesday evening. Their return marks the conclusion of Kenya’s deployment to assist in restoring order in the gang-plagued Caribbean nation. Over 980 officers had been sent since 2024, working alongside international partners from Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Canada.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo led the welcome ceremony, praising the officers for their bravery and dedication. “In a foreign land, under difficult and often dangerous conditions, alongside the Haitian National Police, they upheld the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and courage, flying the Kenyan flag with distinction,” he said. He also honoured three officers who lost their lives, assuring that their families would receive full support.

The first group of officers had returned in December 2025 after an 18-month deployment. The Kenyan contingent focused on suppressing gangs that had seized control of Port-au-Prince, helping secure key infrastructure and enabling humanitarian efforts. Their work set the stage for the new Gang Suppression Force (GSF), which will now take over security operations.

The GSF, approved by the United Nations Security Council, will include up to 5,500 personnel, combining police and soldiers from various nations. It will work closely with the Haitian National Police and Armed Forces to neutralise criminal gangs and maintain safety for civilians. PS Omollo reaffirmed Kenya’s continued support: “We remain committed to sustaining the gains made and working with the international community to support long-term peace efforts in Haiti.”

Kenya’s mission in Haiti highlights the skill, courage, and professionalism of its officers. Their service has strengthened international peacekeeping efforts and demonstrated the country’s willingness to support global stability in dangerous regions.
