Kindiki Defies the Storm: DP Chooses Rain Over Comfort as He Hands Flood Victims a New Beginning

In a dramatic show of solidarity, Kithure Kindiki stood in heavy rain as he addressed flood survivors in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County. The Deputy President had gone to issue title deeds to families displaced by the deadly floods of May 2024. More than 50 people lost their lives in the tragedy. Hundreds were left homeless. For many, this visit marked a turning point.

As Kindiki spoke, dark clouds gathered. Minutes later, rain poured down. A security officer rushed forward with an umbrella. The DP waved him away. He chose to remain uncovered. His words were simple and powerful. He said it would be wrong for him to stay dry while the people he was addressing were being rained on. The crowd erupted in cheers.

The visit was not just symbolic. It came with action. The government has allocated land to 161 affected families. This includes 105 families whose homes were swept away and 56 whose rental houses were destroyed. All have been moved away from the flood path. Each family also received a cash token to help them start building again. The new settlement includes space for a school, a health centre and other key services.

Kindiki said the resettlement was part of the government’s promise to restore dignity to the victims. He told the residents that they deserved safety and a fresh start. He added that no Kenyan should live in fear of another disaster.

The Deputy President was joined by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Principal Secretary Nixon Korir, and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika. Local leaders also attended. Together, they oversaw the handover of the title deeds.

The rain-soaked moment carried political weight too. Kindiki has been working to strengthen support for President William Ruto in the Mt Kenya region ahead of 2027. His stance in Mai Mahiu sent a clear message. He wants to be seen as a leader who shares in the people’s struggles.

As the rain fell harder, chants of “Tutam” filled the air. It was a raw moment. A moment of pain. And a moment of hope.
