Kisii University has opened a daycare and lactation centre on campus. The facility provides a safe and supportive space for children. It also helps student-parents and staff balance work and family life. The launch comes after the university barred students from bringing children into lecture halls. The centre aims to boost well-being, productivity, and retention for working parents.

The centre is well-equipped for lactating mothers. It has a refrigerator for breast milk, a microwave, running water, and comfortable seating. Toys are also available for children. Mothers can care for their babies comfortably while attending classes or working. The facility doubles as a practical learning space for early childhood education students. They get hands-on experience in childcare and child development.
Kisii University Council Chairperson Sara Ruto said the initiative aligns with the Health Act of 2017. “This is a centre where children get care and mothers get time to rest. It also helps students learn practically. Later, we will expand it so children can play safely outside,” she said. Vice Chancellor Nathan Ogechi said supporting student-parents improves focus and productivity. He added that proper nutrition during the first 36 months is vital. “The centre is fenced for security. We will ensure children are safe and supervised at all times,” he said.
The daycare and lactation centre is a milestone for Kisii University. It supports students, staff, and early childhood learners. The initiative shows the importance of family-friendly learning and work spaces. It ensures children are nurtured while parents remain productive. The university sets an example for other institutions on how to combine education, childcare and workforce support.
