Recent data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that 387,418 Kenyans earned over KSh 100,000 per month in 2023. The report highlights notable growth in high earners across the country, with women leading the increase.

The number of high-income earners grew by 15,252 last year. Of these, 92 percent, 14,268, were women. The remaining 1,256 were men. As a result, the total number of six-figure female earners rose to 139,847, while men stood at 247,571. This marks a significant shift, indicating women are increasingly claiming high-paying roles in the workforce.
The private sector continues to dominate as the main employer of high earners. Around 262,047 individuals, or 67.6 percent of those earning over KSh 100,000, work in private enterprises. The public sector accounts for 125,371 high earners. This underscores the vital role private companies play in providing lucrative opportunities.
Sector-specific data reveals that education hosts the largest concentration of high earners, with 89,125 individuals. Wholesale and retail trade follows, employing 46,911 six-figure earners. The human health sector ranks third, with 39,643 employees earning more than KSh 100,000 monthly. These sectors are shaping Kenya’s high-income landscape.
Analysts say the rise of female high earners is a promising trend. It reflects wider access to education and career advancement opportunities for women. It also signals increasing gender balance in senior and well-paying roles.
KNBS data provides insight into the country’s evolving workforce. It highlights where opportunities exist and which sectors are expanding. The findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers, companies and professionals seeking career growth.
