KRA Launches WhatsApp Chatbot to Simplify Tax Filing for Millions

The Kenya Revenue Authority is changing how Kenyans handle taxes by introducing a WhatsApp chatbot designed to simplify the entire process. The new tool, called Shuru, is targeting millions of potential taxpayers who often find filing returns confusing or time-consuming. By using a platform that many people already interact with daily, KRA is aiming to make tax compliance more accessible and less intimidating.

With just a simple message to the official number, users can begin the process without logging into multiple systems or remembering passwords. The chatbot provides access to pre-filled tax details, allowing users to review and submit returns quickly. It also supports services like tax payments, PIN verification, and applications for compliance certificates. For added security, users must confirm their identity using their ID number, KRA PIN, and a one-time password sent to their phone.

KRA says the goal is to remove the frustration that many people associate with filing taxes. “Filing your taxes just got easier… No new apps. No extra steps. Just open WhatsApp and get it done,” the authority explained. The chatbot is built to reduce delays, cut down on errors, and help users complete the process in a shorter time.

This move reflects a broader push towards digital solutions that improve efficiency and increase participation. KRA has already seen better results from earlier digital systems, with more people filing returns and higher revenue collection reported. The WhatsApp option is expected to take this even further by reaching users who may not be comfortable with traditional online platforms.

At the same time, the tax authority is strengthening its monitoring systems. It has cautioned that those who repeatedly declare zero income could face closer checks as new technology tracks financial activity more accurately. While the process is becoming easier, KRA is also making it clear that accountability remains a priority.
