“KSh 1 Million Each!” – Ruto Rewards Harambee Starlets After WAFCON Qualification

President William Ruto has fulfilled his promise to the Harambee Starlets by awarding each player KSh 1 million after their historic 1 – 0 win over Gambia. The victory secured Kenya a place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, with a 4 – 1 aggregate. The win marks a milestone for women’s football in Kenya and a proud moment for the nation.

The return-leg match, played in Senegal, showcased Kenya’s discipline and determination. Having defeated Gambia 3 – 1 in the first leg in Nairobi, the Starlets only needed a draw or a win to advance. They delivered a solid 1- 0 victory, sealing the aggregate score and ending Gambia’s campaign.

President Ruto praised the team’s talent, resilience, and teamwork. “Warm congratulations to our brilliant Harambee Starlets for their 1 – 0 victory over Gambia, sealing a 4 – 1 aggregate triumph that books Kenya’s place at WAFCON in Morocco,” he said. He also commended the technical bench for their leadership, noting that their guidance helped make the nation proud and reinforced Kenya’s growing influence in women’s sports.

Ruto’s KSh 1 million reward to each player highlights the government’s commitment to supporting women’s football. “This decisive win is a glowing testament to the discipline, talent, and indomitable spirit of our women’s footballers. You have made Kenya immensely proud. As you march toward WAFCON, know that the entire nation celebrates you and is behind you,” he added.

The President urged the team to continue their hard work as they prepare for the continental tournament. His gesture not only rewards excellence but also promotes investment and recognition in women’s sports.

The Harambee Starlets’ success and the cash reward inspire young athletes across the country. With national support and financial backing, the team now turns its focus to Morocco, carrying Kenya’s hopes and pride into the 2026 WAFCON. Their victory and Ruto’s recognition send a powerful message that women’s sports in Kenya are valued, celebrated, and supported at the highest level.
