KSh17.2 Billion Loss: Kenya Airways Faces Fresh Turbulence Despite Rising Travel Demand

Kenya Airways has reported a sharp financial reversal. The national carrier posted a KSh17.2 billion loss for the year ending December 2025. This comes just a year after recording a KSh5.4 billion profit. The shift highlights the fragile nature of the aviation industry, even as passenger demand continues to rise.

According to the airline’s leadership, the loss was not caused by weak demand. Instead, global disruptions played a major role. Supply chain challenges affected aircraft maintenance, spare parts availability, and operational efficiency. These issues increased costs and disrupted schedules, placing pressure on the airline’s bottom line.

KQ Chairman Kiprono Kittony defended the airline’s performance. “While our financial performance reflects a challenging year, it is important to recognise that this was driven primarily by global supply chain disruptions and not a lack of demand,” he said. He emphasized that travelers are still flying. Demand remains strong across key routes.

This creates a complex situation. On one hand, more people are traveling. On the other, airlines are struggling to keep operations smooth and affordable. For Kenya Airways, rising operational costs have offset gains from increased passenger numbers.

Despite the loss, the airline remains optimistic. Kittony noted that “the appetite for travel remains strong,” pointing to long-term recovery potential. He also highlighted the airline’s strategic importance, especially in connecting Africa to global markets.

The results raise important questions about resilience. Can airlines adapt quickly enough to global disruptions? And how can they balance rising demand with operational challenges?

For now, Kenya Airways faces a tough balancing act. It must manage costs, maintain service quality, and rebuild profitability. The skies may be busy again, but financial stability is still a work in progress.
