“Leaders of Today, Not Tomorrow”: Uhuru Kenyatta Challenges African Youth to Take Charge

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged young Africans to lead now, not later. He warned that waiting for the future means missing their chance. Speaking at the IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA) Annual Alumni Conference at Windsor Hotel in Nairobi, he said youth must shape Africa’s story today.

“If you keep believing you are leaders of tomorrow, that tomorrow will never come,” he said. “You are the leaders of today.” His words drew loud applause from young delegates from across Africa.

Uhuru reminded the audience that Kenya’s early leaders, such as Tom Mboya and Kenneth Matiba, began leading in their twenties. He said their courage and vision built the nation and proved that youth can make a mark. He called on young people to be bold, creative and honest in leadership.

The conference, themed “Harnessing Youth Leadership to Drive Africa’s Growth”, gathered IGAD alumni, diplomats and regional leaders. Among them were IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu and Senator Crystal Asige. The meeting celebrated young Africans shaping a new, ethical, and united leadership culture.

Uhuru praised the youth already driving social and community change. He said their energy shows Africa’s renewal has begun. “This is not just a meeting, it’s a movement,” he said.

Senator Crystal Asige urged young leaders to combine purpose with humility. She told them to work hard and aim for excellence that stands out. She added that true leadership starts with service and integrity.

The conference closed with a shared message; Africa’s youth must stop waiting for tomorrow.
