Massive Fire Destroys 30 Staff Houses at Lang’ata Women’s Prison, No Casualties

A devastating fire engulfed staff quarters at Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Security Prison on Wednesday evening, destroying 30 housing units. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported, but all affected homes were completely lost.

The Kenya Prisons Service said the blaze began at around 5:30 AM and quickly spread, fueled by a gas cylinder explosion in one of the houses. “The fire affected a total of 30 housing units, which were completely destroyed. Regrettably, no property was salvaged from the affected units. We are, however, relieved to confirm that no casualties or injuries were reported,” stated Prisons spokesperson Yusuf Kaitopok.

Officers from Nairobi West Prison, Jamhuri Prison, and Nairobi Medium Prison were deployed to secure the area following the incident. Emergency teams, including the County Fire Brigade, Kenya Defence Forces, and Kahawa Garrison Fire Engines, acted swiftly to contain the flames. Kaitopok extended his gratitude to the teams for their prompt response in preventing further destruction.

Eyewitnesses allege the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault from an iron box left plugged in. One resident said, “I have heard that this resulted from an electric fault. Properties were destroyed. Now these affected security guards are homeless. We urge the government to put up permanent structures for the guards; that is our main prayer.”

Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco visited the affected families and assured them that the government would provide emergency support. She revealed that semi-permanent housing units are already planned for the displaced officers. “We are working on resolving the housing challenges for our security officers. Their welfare is our priority,” she said.

The incident has sparked calls for improved safety measures and more durable housing for prison staff. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire, promising updates once more information is available. Meanwhile, security and emergency protocols in the staff quarters have been reinforced to prevent future incidents.

The fire has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the need for stronger infrastructure and emergency preparedness in staff housing areas.
