Her brave move to come into the Senate wearing white trousers with apparent blood stains ushered nominated senator Gloria Orwoba to the national limelight.
She said the move was compelled by the need to raise awareness and end the period shame in the country.
Gloria Orwoba was set to table a motion in parliament to push for free sanitary pads for women with the aim of ending period poverty.
However fellow senators came out in an uproar over the move terming it indecent and which did not fall under the rules of the house on dressing.
Fellow senator Sen Tabitha Mutinda would go on to ask the speaker to rule whether Ms. Orwoba had adhered to the house dress code, terming it uncomfortable and inappropriate.
“You do not understand if she’s on the normal woman cycle or she’s faking it, and it’s so indecent,’ said Mrs. Mutinda.
This move saw her suspended from the senate for a period of not less than six months on sexual harassment claims.
This means that the senator will not return to the House until February. She also got another big blow after she was barred from local and international traveling, where most legislators get an extra coin besides their normal salary.
However, Claire Gachie, a content creator has come up with a petition to the director of Public prosecutions(Office of Director of Public Prosecution) to support Sen Gloria Orwoba’s plea to end the period shame in the country.
The petition seeks to amend the article that upholds the dignity of every Kenyan citizen to include even period shaming as an offense punishable by law.
The amendment required states that every person has inherent dignity and the right to be respected and protected. No person shall discriminate directly or indirectly against any woman on grounds of her menstrual cycle(period shaming).
