Meta has confirmed it took action against the social media accounts of Tanzanian activists Mange Kimambi and Maria Sarungi. Both are among the most outspoken critics of President Samia Suluhu’s administration. The move came after repeated platform violations and direct government regulatory demands.

On December 3, Mange Kimambi announced that her Instagram account, which had more than 2.7 million followers, was permanently deleted. She also revealed that she was blocked from WhatsApp, another Meta-owned platform. This effectively cut off her main communication channels and reduced her digital influence.
Meta explained that Kimambi’s Instagram profile was removed due to repeated breaches of its rules. “We respect freedom of expression and aim to provide platforms for users worldwide. However, we enforce strict standards. Accounts that repeatedly violate rules are removed, and duplicate accounts are not allowed,” the company said.
Maria Sarungi also reported that her Instagram account had been shadow-banned. Followers within Tanzania could not view her posts. Meta confirmed the restrictions were implemented following a legal order from Tanzanian authorities. “We restricted access in Tanzania in response to regulatory demands,” Meta said.
Both activists have long used social media to criticize government policies, highlight alleged abuses, and mobilize public discussion. Their digital influence made them key opposition voices outside traditional political structures. Analysts warn that the actions could curb online dissent and limit civic engagement in Tanzania.
The incident has sparked international debate about freedom of expression and the role of social media platforms in balancing regulatory compliance with protecting activists’ rights. Experts say these cases highlight the growing tension between political oversight and digital expression.
With social media shaping public discourse globally, the removal and restriction of prominent accounts like Kimambi and Sarungi demonstrate how tech governance and political power intersect. Many observers are now closely watching how platforms like Meta navigate legal obligations while maintaining space for users to speak freely.
