Miguna Miguna Breaks Silence on Skipping Raila Odinga’s Burial, Cites Betrayal, Broken Ties and Political Disillusionment

Lawyer Miguna Miguna has explained why he did not attend the state burial of former prime minister Raila Odinga. His remarks have sparked fresh debate across the country.

Speaking from Canada during a virtual interview, Miguna said his absence was deliberate. He stated that Raila’s death did not require him to drop his commitments. In his view, death is universal. No person, he said, is more important than another.

Miguna then pointed to personal grievances. He claimed Raila never attended the burials of his close relatives. Because of this, he felt no duty to attend Raila’s funeral. According to him, respect must be mutual. Without it, obligations disappear.

Although Raila received a state burial with full military honours, Miguna dismissed the ceremony. He said titles and offices do not elevate human life. For him, honesty and fairness guide every decision he makes.

Miguna also revisited their political fallout. He reminded Kenyans that he once worked closely with Raila. However, he accused the former premier of making choices that caused suffering. He claimed many Kenyans were harmed while fighting for Raila’s causes.

He further criticised Raila’s political alliances. Miguna said Raila entered deals with former president Uhuru Kenyatta and later President William Ruto. He argued these moves betrayed supporters who expected change.

The lawyer also addressed the 2024 Gen Z-led protests. He said the youth were ready to transform the country. However, he claimed Raila weakened the movement by supporting Ruto. In his view, that moment changed Kenya’s political direction.

Miguna insisted he would not glorify Raila after death. He said doing so would be dishonest. Truth, he stressed, matters more than public praise.

While many Kenyans continue to mourn Raila as a national icon, Miguna’s comments offer a different view. His words have divided opinion. Yet they have reopened discussions on loyalty, leadership and political accountability.
