Mike Sonko Pledges Support for Families of Victims Shot During Raila Odinga’s Kasarani Viewing

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has vowed to support families affected by the tragic shootings that erupted during the public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani Stadium. What was intended to be a peaceful farewell descended into panic when police fired tear gas and live bullets after mourners breached a gate, leaving at least three people dead.

The memorial, initially scheduled to take place inside Parliament, was relocated to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, due to an unexpectedly large turnout. The huge crowd overwhelmed security, leading to chaos, injuries, and fatalities, leaving mourners shocked and heartbroken.

On Tuesday, October 21, Sonko condemned the incident, calling for accountability and justice for the victims. He criticized the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for remaining silent, urging swift action against those responsible.

“It was devastating. These were innocent mourners coming to pay respects to Baba and his family. What happened was unacceptable. The families deserve justice. Whoever ordered the shooting must be held responsible, and IPOA must act quickly,” Sonko said.

Going further, Sonko pledged to provide legal assistance to the victims’ families should authorities fail to act. He emphasized that grieving families should not face this tragedy alone and confirmed that a team of lawyers would be deployed to ensure justice is sought. “We have a competent legal team and I will ensure the families are represented. No one should suffer without support,” he added.

Kenyans have widely praised Sonko for stepping in, with many taking to social media to express admiration. Greytone Steven Koipo said, “Good job. Even the president has not spoken about this,” while Mary Mbocho called him her hero: “God bless you, Sonko.” Others, like Caleb Kasembeli, highlighted Sonko’s previous support for victims of post-election violence, showing his continued commitment to helping vulnerable Kenyans.

As the affected families mourn their loss, Sonko’s promise of assistance offers both emotional and legal support, reinforcing the urgent need for accountability and compassion in the aftermath of Kenya’s recent tragedy.
