Dozens of families in Gaciku A and Gaciku B villages in Kirinyaga County are reeling from heavy financial losses after falling prey to a fake electricity connection scheme that has cost them over KSh 2 million. The victims, mostly farmers and small-scale traders, say they were deceived by fraudsters posing as Kenya Power officials who promised to connect their homes to the national grid under what was said to be a government-backed project.

According to community representative Elizabeth Njeri, the scammers convinced villagers to contribute between KSh 18,000 and KSh 49,000 per household, claiming the payments would cover connection fees. She said the group appeared genuine because they came with official-looking documents and even delivered electric poles and wiring materials. “They told us it was part of a government initiative to connect rural homes to electricity. We believed them because we had waited for years,” Njeri explained.
Within a few days, installations began, and some homes were powered. Excitement filled the village as residents finally enjoyed electricity for the first time. However, their joy was short-lived. After only three days, Kenya Power officials arrived with police and disconnected all the lines, saying the connections were illegal and unauthorized.
Resident Michael Murimi, who paid KSh 42,000, said he even hired a local electrician to wire his house. “We were so happy when the lights came on. But it didn’t last. The officials said everything had to be pulled down,” he said in frustration. Another victim, Jane Wanja, shared that some villagers had sold livestock or taken loans to raise the money. “Many are now in debt and emotionally broken after losing their savings,” she said.
The matter has since been reported at Kabonge Police Station and Kenya Power’s Kerugoya office. Investigations are ongoing as residents demand justice and refunds. Kenya Power has once again warned the public against engaging unauthorized agents and urged people to confirm any power connection projects directly through its official offices.
The scam has left an entire community in financial distress and plunged their hopes for electricity back into darkness.
