Ministry of Education Releases 2025 KJSEA Results, First Cohort of CBE Learners to Join Senior Schools

The Ministry of Education has released the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results. This marks the first cohort of Competency-Based Education (CBE) learners moving from Junior to Senior School. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba said all 1,130,459 candidates will join one of three Senior School pathways: Arts & Sports Science, Social Sciences or STEM.

CS Ogamba explained overall performance was divided into four competency levels: Exceeding Expectation, Meeting Expectation, Approaching Expectation, and Below Expectation. Scores ranged from 1 to 8. Level 8 represents the highest performance. “These bands help separate exemplary performance from good performance,” he said.

Out of twelve subjects, seven recorded strong results. Hindu Religious Education led with 84.62% of learners meeting or exceeding expectations. Integrated Science scored 61.77%, Social Studies 58.56%, Creative Arts & Sports 58.04%, Kiswahili 57.98%, Christian Religious Education 53.96%, and Agriculture 52.26%. Overall, 75% of learners reached at least the Approaching Expectation level. Creative Arts & Sports had the strongest performance, with 96.84% scoring Approaching Expectation 2 and above. Agriculture, Kiswahili, and Social Studies also performed well.

CS Ogamba noted that Approaching Expectation is enough for learners to progress to Senior School pathways requiring basic competencies. Female learners outperformed males in ten subjects. The widest gaps were in Kiswahili, CRE, English, and Social Studies.

Mathematics and Kenyan Sign Language remained weak areas. Only 32.44% and 22.14% of learners, respectively, reached Meeting or Exceeding Expectations.

Pathway eligibility showed 59.09% of learners qualify for STEM, 46.52% for Social Sciences, and 48.73% for Arts & Sports. Placement into Senior Schools will consider performance and chosen pathways. The exercise starts next week and ends by December 20, 2025. Grade 10 learners report on January 12, 2026.
