Minneapolis is on edge after two federal immigration agents were placed on administrative leave following the fatal shooting of a city resident. The incident has sparked protests, anger, and growing political tension across the country.

The man killed was Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse. He was shot on Saturday during a federal operation in the city. Video footage showed masked officers forcing him to the ground before firing several shots. Federal officials said the agents were put on leave as part of standard protocol while investigations continue.
President Donald Trump, however, has taken a tougher stance. He accused Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of playing with fire. Trump criticized Frey for refusing to allow city police to assist federal immigration agents. Frey responded that local officers should protect residents and prevent crime, not enforce federal immigration laws.
Public anger has grown quickly. Pretti’s killing came after another deadly shooting earlier this month. That case involved Renee Good, also a US citizen, who was killed during a separate federal operation. The two deaths have fueled nationwide protests and calls for tighter control of immigration agencies.
In response to the backlash, the Trump administration made changes to its local leadership. Greg Bovino, known for his hardline approach, was removed. He was replaced by Tom Homan, who is seen as more focused on policy and coordination. Attorney General Pam Bondi also traveled to Minneapolis. She announced the arrest of 16 people accused of attacking federal officers during recent clashes.
Still, residents say little has changed. Community activists report that masked agents continue to detain people in public spaces. Fear and tension remain high in many neighborhoods.
The political fallout is also spreading to Congress. Democrats are threatening to block government funding unless reforms are made to federal immigration agencies. Trump has also increased his attacks on Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar.
During a public event this week, a man sprayed Omar with a liquid before being arrested. Omar said Trump’s rhetoric has helped create a hostile and dangerous political climate.
As protests continue and investigations move forward, Minneapolis remains a flashpoint in the national debate over immigration, civil rights, and the power of federal law enforcement.
