President Donald Trump has firmly defended his decision to order U.S. forces to join Israel in striking Iran, saying he believed Tehran was preparing to attack first. “If we didn’t do it, they were going to attack first,” Trump said during remarks at the White House. “I felt strongly about that.” He dismissed claims that Israel pressured Washington into action, adding, “I might have forced their hand.”

His comments appeared to differ from those of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who earlier outlined a slightly different sequence of events. Rubio had suggested that U.S. intervention was tied to fears of retaliation following anticipated Israeli military action. “We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action,” Rubio said, adding that without a preemptive move, “we would suffer higher casualties.” Later, when questioned again, he simplified the message: “The president determined we were not going to get hit first. It’s that simple, guys.”
Iran has strongly rejected the American justification. Officials in Tehran described the assault as unprovoked and denied planning imminent attacks. They also continue to deny seeking a nuclear weapon. According to senior U.S. officials, recent negotiations in Geneva failed after Iran declined to abandon uranium enrichment. One official claimed Iranian representatives were “unwilling to give up the building blocks” necessary to develop a nuclear bomb. Iran disputes that assertion.
The mixed explanations have triggered political backlash. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized Rubio’s remarks, writing that they were “basically the worst possible thing he could have said.” Megyn Kelly also questioned the strategy, stating, “Our government’s job is not to look out for Iran or for Israel. It’s to look out for us.”
With midterm elections approaching, the White House is under pressure to clarify its reasoning. Trump remains resolute. “It’s something that had to be done,” he said. Still, critics are demanding evidence that the strike prevented an imminent threat rather than igniting a wider conflict.
