Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed the death of a porter who went missing on Mount Kenya. Samuel Macharia Wanjohi’s body was found nearly three weeks after he disappeared. He had been trekking along the Sirimon–Shipton route. The body was located in Hinde Valley at a high altitude within Mount Kenya National Park.

Wanjohi was reported missing on December 23, 2025. KWS immediately activated its Mountain Search and Rescue Unit. A formal report was filed at Chogoria Police Station under OB number 30/24/2/2025. The unit works to ensure the safety of visitors in Kenya’s protected mountain areas.
The search involved multiple agencies. Rangers, the Mountain Search and Rescue Team, aerial surveillance units, and ground patrols combed key areas. These included Shipton Camp, Austrian Hut, Mackinder’s Valley, Sendeyo, Hinde Valley, Mintos, and the Timau Route. The search faced harsh weather, rugged terrain, and poor visibility. Conditions made the operation difficult and time-consuming.
KWS worked with the National Police Service, mountain guides, porters, local community members, and Wanjohi’s family. Their combined efforts led to the recovery of his body on January 9. He was found at about 4,300 metres above sea level in Hinde Valley.
KWS expressed deep condolences to Wanjohi’s family, friends, guides, and the Mount Kenya community. “Kenya Wildlife Service regrets to report the loss of life of Mr. Samuel Macharia Wanjohi, whose body has been located,” the agency said.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives in Kenya’s mountain areas. It emphasized stronger safety measures, better emergency preparedness and improved coordination for future incidents.
The case highlights the dangers of high-altitude trekking. It shows the importance of trained rescue teams, community support, and well-coordinated search operations. This incident reminds all visitors to exercise caution and follow safety protocols on Mount Kenya.
