Muhoozi Sparks Regional Backlash After Calling Kenyans ‘Cowards’, Fueling Outrage and Heightening Tensions Across East Africa

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stirred fresh controversy. His remarks targeted Kenyans. He shared them online on Monday, January 20. The comments spread fast. They angered users in Uganda and Kenya.

Muhoozi called Kenyans “cowards.” He claimed they talk loudly on social media. He said they fail to defend their views in real conflict. The remarks drew instant backlash. Many Kenyans accused him of disrespect. Others questioned his role as a senior military officer.

The outrage grew after Muhoozi linked his remarks to opposition politics. He made claims about killing supporters of Bobi Wine. He also issued threats toward the opposition leader. The comments shocked many. They angered Ugandans. They also unsettled Kenyans.

The comments come as Uganda heads toward the 2026 General Election. Bobi Wine remains President Yoweri Museveni’s main challenger. Political pressure is rising. Kenyans have followed the race closely. Some leaders openly support Bobi Wine. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is among them. His support appeared to irritate Muhoozi.

Reaction in Kenya was swift. Some condemned the remarks. Others mocked Muhoozi online. Some dared him to repeat the claims in Nairobi. A section accused him of being obsessed with Kenya. They said he keeps dragging the country into Uganda’s politics.

Ugandans also reacted. Some criticised the tone. Others urged restraint. Analysts warned that such language harms diplomacy. They said it risks regional stability.

As criticism grows, calls for calm are increasing. Observers want leaders to lower the tone. For now, Muhoozi’s words have strained relations. They have also reignited debate across East Africa.
