Mutahi Kahiga Leads Governors’ Stand Against Senate Over Harassment, Threats During Audits

Tensions are rising between Kenya’s governors and the Senate. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has emerged as the voice of the Council of Governors (CoG), leading the group in a bold stand against alleged harassment. The dispute comes as governors threaten to boycott Senate audits over claims of intimidation and extortion.

At a retreat in Kilifi County, Kahiga said the governors will not attend any further audit sessions until their concerns are addressed. He accused four senators on the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) of repeatedly humiliating county leaders. He said the threats included imprisonment and public shaming. “We have heard senators talk about us. We have enough evidence. Let no one think they can intimidate us. We are elected leaders delivering services. Do your constitutional work without harassment,” Kahiga said.

The governors emphasized that they are fully committed to accountability. However, they argue that oversight should be conducted with dignity and respect. Kahiga noted that threats of arrest will not stop them from performing their duties. He added that structured engagement with Senate leadership is the only way to resolve the ongoing disputes.

Former Senate Speaker and Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka supported Kahiga’s remarks. Lusaka said the governors have never refused accountability. Instead, he pointed out that repeated complaints highlight issues within the committee itself. Governors have continued to appear before the Senate, showing their willingness to explain how public resources are managed.

The dispute highlights the growing friction in Kenya’s devolved system. Governors say they face intimidation, while senators insist audits are mandatory and non-negotiable. Citizens and analysts are watching closely, as the standoff affects how public resources are overseen.

The coming weeks will be crucial. Both sides must find common ground to ensure accountability continues smoothly. How the Senate and governors handle this conflict could shape the future of governance in Kenya.
