Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has warned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other political leaders against forming tribal-based coalitions ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking on Sunday in Kwale County, Muthama said leaders should focus on unity and development. He urged them to abandon divisive ethnic politics.

Muthama, who serves as a Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), said Kenya’s political space has become tense. Rhetoric, rivalry, and online debates dominate public discourse. He warned that tribal-based politics weakens the country. “My position in Kenya is clear; I do not support tribal or community-based leadership,” he said.
He stressed that no single community can determine the presidency. Kenya is too diverse for ethnic votes alone to decide elections. “It is not Kikuyu votes that make a president, it is not Kamba votes that make a president; it is the votes of Kenyans,” he added. National leadership, he said, comes from broad support across the country.
Muthama cited past leaders to prove his point. Former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta all won with wide national backing. They did not rely on tribal support alone. He called on leaders aiming for 2027 to form inclusive coalitions. They should focus on the country’s development and unity.
His remarks come amid talks of new political alliances. On November 30, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced a pact between the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper. He said the parties would field joint candidates in key Nairobi seats. However, Kalonzo Musyoka denied any formal agreement. The conflicting statements fueled speculation about alliances.
Muthama urged leaders to rise above tribal politics. He said Kenya’s future depends on unity and inclusive leadership. He stressed that development must come before narrowing ethnic interests. His message is clear: the country cannot afford divisive politics as it heads toward 2027.
