A major sting operation in Keumbu, Kisii County, has led to the seizure of counterfeit alcohol worth an estimated Ksh 1.2 million, following a coordinated effort by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the National Police Service (NPS).
The Wednesday raid, which marked another step in the government’s war against illicit brews, came after weeks of intelligence-led surveillance on a suspected ring of distributors behind the illegal trade. The fake beverages; packaged to mimic leading alcohol brands – were described as a serious health threat to unsuspecting consumers.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa confirmed the operation’s success, warning those behind the counterfeit trade that the agency’s nationwide crackdown is gaining momentum.
“This Kisii operation is part of our Rapid Results Initiative targeting the production and sale of illegal alcohol and drugs. Let it be known – we are dismantling every link in this dangerous network,” Dr. Omerikwa said.
He noted that the proliferation of fake and toxic drinks continues to endanger lives and urged communities to play an active role in protecting public health by reporting suspicious activities.
“The rise in substance abuse and distribution of illegal alcohol is alarming. We will not relent until every individual responsible for endangering our people’s health is held accountable,” he added.
Authorities have since handed over the confiscated products and related evidence to investigative agencies for further analysis and prosecution of the culprits. Officials suspect the operation in Keumbu is part of a larger syndicate extending to neighboring counties.
NACADA has called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any illegal manufacturing, distribution or sale of alcohol, emphasizing that public cooperation is crucial in curbing the spread of unsafe products.
“The protection of our communities begins with awareness and joint action,” Dr. Omerikwa concluded, affirming that more operations will follow across the country in the coming weeks.
