Nairobi CBD Traffic Hit by Major Road Closures Around City Hall and KICC

Traffic flow in Nairobi’s Central Business District was heavily disrupted on Thursday after police enforced temporary road closures around key government zones. The move affected hundreds of motorists during peak hours, with congestion building up across multiple connecting streets as access to critical routes was restricted.

Among the roads affected were City Hall Way, sections of Wabera Street and the Supreme Court roundabout. Police barricades were mounted early in the day, limiting entry into sensitive areas near City Hall. Motorists were forced to divert to alternative routes, many experiencing delays as traffic piled up in surrounding streets not under restriction.

The closures were implemented to allow secure movement and coordination of activities near the Kenyatta International Convention Centre and City Hall. The two locations were placed under a shared security perimeter due to ongoing high-level engagements, including an event attracting both local and international attention.

Traffic police officers were stationed at key junctions to direct vehicles and maintain order. Despite the efforts, the sudden changes caught some drivers off guard, leading to confusion and slower movement across the CBD. Public service vehicles were also affected, with some adjusting their routes to avoid blocked sections.

Authorities called on the public to remain patient and follow instructions issued on the ground. “We urge motorists to use alternative routes and follow the directions of traffic officers on site. We regret any inconvenience caused,” police stated in an advisory.

The temporary shutdown of these roads also impacted nearby businesses, as reduced accessibility limited customer movement within parts of the CBD. Pedestrians, however, were still able to navigate through certain sections under guidance from security personnel.

Normal traffic flow is expected to resume once the security operations are scaled down and roads reopened. For now, motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance and avoid the affected zones where possible.
