Nairobi Demolishes Unsafe Five-Storey Building Near Mirema School

Nairobi city officials have ordered the demolition of a five-storey building along Mirema Drive. Inspectors declared the structure unsafe. Severe cracks in the walls and foundation posed a risk of collapse. The building is located next to Mirema School, raising concerns for children and residents.

The county’s Urban Planning and Compliance Department led the assessment. They worked with the National Disaster Management Department and the National Construction Authority. Officials said the owner had received multiple notices over the past three years. No corrective action was taken. Heavy machinery will be used to safely bring down the building.

City Director of Planning and Enforcement, Tom Ochar, addressed the media at the site. He said the building was a “disaster waiting to happen.” Authorities gave the owner time to fix the structure but the deadlines were ignored. Safety measures will protect residents, school staff, and students during the demolition.

The demolition highlights ongoing challenges in Nairobi’s construction sector. Rapid urban growth has led to unsafe structures. Many developers ignore rules and regulations. Officials emphasized that all construction projects must comply with approved plans and safety standards. Professionals are required to sign indemnity forms to ensure accountability.

If a developer or engineer leaves a project, they must notify the county. This allows authorities to intervene and prevent unsafe construction. Ochar said this is vital to avoid tragedies. “We follow the law. Safety is non-negotiable,” he said.

Residents welcomed the demolition. Parents said it was necessary to protect children. They criticized developers who put profits over safety. The community hopes authorities continue strict inspections across the city.

The incident also raises questions about enforcement. Even with laws in place, some property owners ignore warnings. Experts say this undermines trust in Nairobi’s construction sector. The demolition serves as a reminder that compliance must be enforced.

City officials have promised stricter monitoring. They aim to prevent similar risks in residential areas near schools. The Mirema Drive operation shows the importance of proactive inspections. It also underscores the responsibility of developers to prioritize public safety over shortcuts.
