Nairobi Governor Sakaja’s Cabinet Approves Two Paid Menstrual Health Days for Women Employees

Nairobi County has taken a big step to support women in the workforce. Governor Johnson Sakaja’s Cabinet approved a policy giving women two paid Menstrual Health Days every month. The move aims to boost women’s health, well-being, and productivity.

The policy is now part of the county’s HR framework. Many female employees face challenges during menstruation. Painful periods often make it hard to work effectively. Women make up more than half of Nairobi County’s workforce. This directly affects service delivery and efficiency.

Before this policy, menstrual health was not recognised. Women had to report to work even when unwell. Now, they can take two monthly days off for menstrual health without extra cost to the county. The Cabinet said the policy is evidence-based. It aligns with gender equality and inclusive governance.

Nairobi joins countries like Zambia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Spain with similar menstrual leave policies. The county says the initiative will empower women and improve workplace productivity. It also creates a healthier, more inclusive environment.

Governor Sakaja highlighted that supporting women is key. Addressing menstrual health challenges helps women perform better while maintaining dignity.

The policy has been welcomed by women’s rights groups and county staff. They say it is a progressive move for gender-sensitive governance. Other counties and institutions may follow suit.

This policy shows Nairobi County’s commitment to inclusivity. It ensures women can thrive professionally while managing their health needs. The county expects better morale, higher productivity and improved service delivery.
