Residents of Njiru in Kasarani have found a heartfelt way to honour the late Raila Odinga by naming a road after him. The three – kilometre stretch linking Njiru and Mwiki will now bear the name “Raila Odinga Road,” a permanent reminder of the man they say changed lives through his unwavering fight for equality and justice.

The locals unveiled the new road signage on Sunday, October 26, marking the moment with deep emotion and admiration. They said the gesture was not only a tribute to Raila’s memory but also a celebration of his lifelong commitment to uplifting the underprivileged.
According to residents, Raila’s influence in their community runs deep. They credited him for his role in establishing Obama Estate, a housing project that resettled squatters who had lived without shelter or stability for years. “When Raila Odinga united with the late President Daniel Moi, he helped ensure squatters from Dandora and other areas were given homes in Obama Estate,” said one resident.
The residents described Raila as a visionary leader who never forgot the struggles of ordinary people. They urged local leaders to upgrade the newly named road to reflect the status of the national hero they were mourning. “We want this road to remind future generations of Raila’s sacrifice and courage,” another resident added.
After days of mourning his passing, the community said they wanted to channel their grief into something meaningful. Naming the road, they explained, would help immortalise Raila’s legacy and give them a way to celebrate his life rather than dwell on their loss.
“We have mourned him for a week, but today, we choose to celebrate his legacy,” said one of the residents during the unveiling. “This road will keep his memory alive for generations.”
The residents also hinted at plans to erect a statue of Raila Odinga in the area, symbolising their enduring respect and gratitude for his impact. To them, “Raila Odinga Road” is not just a name – it’s a story of hope, struggle and an unbreakable bond with a leader who stood for the people.
