“No development should endanger residents”: Senate Lands Committee Investigates Langata Building Near Wilson Airport

The Senate Lands Committee visited Langata to check if a building under construction is affecting Wilson Airport. Lawmakers are concerned the development could block the airport’s emergency exit. This could pose serious risks to flight operations.

The team also investigated claims that the building blocked drainage and sewerage systems. Residents reported flooding and cracks in their homes due to the construction. Mohamed Faki, Senate Lands and Settlement Committee Chair, said residents had raised concerns for a long time.

“There are complaints that drainage systems are blocked. Homes are facing flooding and cracks. They obtained an order from the Environment Tribunal. But the order has been ignored,” Faki said.

Nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana said residents followed proper procedures. They went to NEMA and submitted complaints. “Unfortunately, nothing has worked. I thank the Senate Committee for coming and seeing the problem themselves,” Kibwana added.

Lawmakers wanted to see if the building affects the airport’s emergency protocols. Residents said repeated complaints yielded no action. Heavy rains worsened the flooding. Cracks in houses are getting bigger. Safety and property remain at risk.

The committee promised more investigations. They urged authorities to enforce environmental and construction rules. “Compliance is key. No development should endanger residents or public infrastructure,” Faki said.

Authorities and the developer will submit reports to the Senate soon. The committee will decide whether construction can continue, be altered, or stopped. Residents want urgent intervention. They fear unchecked building could harm their homes and the airport.

The visit shows parliament’s growing oversight of city developments. Lawmakers aim to balance rapid urban growth with public safety. Wilson Airport operations and nearby residents must be protected.

This inspection is part of a larger effort to monitor urban projects. The Senate is determined to ensure laws are followed. Residents hope this leads to swift action and safer neighborhoods.
