Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has brushed off remarks by Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who referred to Newcastle as a “smaller club” while discussing Alexander Isak’s move to Anfield. The comment came after Isak limped off during Liverpool’s 5 – 1 Champions League win against Eintracht Frankfurt, with Slot suggesting the striker’s struggles were partly due to “not training or playing in pre-season at a smaller club.”

Howe, however, refused to be drawn into a feud. Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Fulham, the Magpies boss kept his response cool and diplomatic. “I don’t have to do that, I don’t feel,” he said. “But you obviously know what my answer would be.”
He declined to engage further adding, “Alex is no longer at this football club, so I won’t comment on it.” His composed tone signaled a desire to move on, not trade jabs.
Still, Howe made a subtle yet firm defense of Newcastle’s growth and professionalism. “The set-up here is very good,” he said. “It’s not perfect – we’ve got things to improve – but the owners have developed the facilities very well. You can see ongoing construction that will make things even better.”
Slot’s words may have stirred debate but Howe’s focus remains firmly on his current squad. He expressed satisfaction with Isak’s replacement, German forward Nick Woltemade, who has already scored five goals this season. “He’s made a vast improvement physically,” Howe said. “He’s more at home, more relaxed and his natural personality is coming through.”
Despite Newcastle’s slow start, just two wins leaving them 14th in the table, Howe remains optimistic. He praised the team’s mentality and Woltemade’s ability to handle pressure. “It’s not easy playing every three or four days, but he’s managing that responsibility really well,” he added.
As tensions rise between rival managers, Howe’s calm response once again reflects his quiet authority, a reminder that Newcastle, “smaller club” or not, are determined to keep building rather than bickering.
