ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has turned the party’s internal wrangles into a fight over process. Speaking at Ufungamano House, he avoided a direct resignation. Instead, he questioned how new leaders are taking charge after Raila Odinga’s death. His message was sharp and deliberate.

He praised his time under Raila but rejected the current direction. “It has been the honour of my life to serve,” he said, before drawing a clear line. “I will not be the SG of mediocrity.” The statement drew loud reactions from supporters. It was not just a personal attack. It challenged the legitimacy of the new leadership under Oburu Oginga.
Sifuna insisted the issue is not about clinging to power. He said openly that he does not have to remain Secretary General. “Sifuna was not born to be the SG forever,” he told the crowd. But he stressed that any leadership change must follow party rules. “Ukutaka kureplace Sifuna fuata katiba ya chama,” he added, demanding a lawful and open process.
He also dismissed fears about losing influence. “Sifuna sio mwoga,” he said, insisting he is ready to serve in any role given by the people. According to him, leadership positions are decided by wananchi, not internal deals. His confidence showed his political future goes beyond one office.
His remarks came as a rival faction pushed ahead with its own convention. This has created two centres of power within ODM. Each side claims to represent the true voice of the party. The division continues to grow.
By focusing on rules and fairness, Sifuna has shifted the debate. It is no longer just about who leads ODM. It is now about how leaders are chosen. That question could shape the party’s future ahead of the 2027 elections.
