Nottingham Forest’s turbulent season takes another turn as Sean Dyche steps in to manage the team ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Porto. The two-time European champions have struggled in both domestic and European competitions, claiming only one point from their opening two group-stage matches.

Forest’s managerial merry-go-round has seen three coaches in just a few months. Dyche replaces Ange Postecoglou, who lasted a mere 40 days after taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo, the man who had guided the club to a remarkable return to Europe last season. Postecoglou, despite winning the Europa League with Tottenham, failed to translate success to the City Ground. Dyche now inherits a squad buoyed by over £180 million in summer signings but languishing in the Premier League relegation zone with just five points from eight games.
The 54-year-old manager arrives with a wealth of experience and a reputation for pragmatism. “There’s plenty of quality here. Our job is to find the right balance between attacking risk and defensive solidity,” Dyche told the club website. Known for creating well-organized teams, he will focus on shoring up a defense that has already conceded five goals in Europe, while seeking to get the best out of his talented squad.
Porto, the Portuguese league leaders, travel to the City Ground unbeaten, having won both their opening group games, though scoring only three goals in total. Dyche’s Forest face the challenge of a methodical opponent, yet the visitors’ limited attacking output offers hope for a timely boost in morale.
A victory would be Forest’s first in European competition since 1995 and could mark a turning point for Dyche, winning over both fans and owner Evangelos Marinakis. As European fixtures unfold, other clubs like Rangers, Aston Villa, Fenerbahce, Nice and Celtic will also look to build momentum in the group stages.
For Dyche, Thursday represents more than just another match- it is a chance to bring stability, restore confidence and prove that Forest can still compete on the European stage.
