NTSA Launches Instant Fines System to Improve Road Safety Across Kenya

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially rolled out its new Instant Fines Traffic Management System. The initiative is aimed at making traffic enforcement faster, more transparent and efficient for motorists across the country.

According to a public notice, the system will automatically issue traffic violation alerts via SMS to drivers immediately after an offence is detected. “This process is fully automated and operates without human intervention, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability in traffic enforcement,” the notice states.

The NTSA emphasized that all fines issued through the system can be settled through the branch network of KCB Group within seven days. Failure to pay on time will result in the fine accumulating interest. Motorists with pending fines will also be restricted from transacting on NTSA service platforms until the outstanding amounts are cleared.

The move comes as part of broader efforts to reduce road accidents and encourage responsible driving in Kenya. The system targets common offences such as speeding, driving without a valid license, or violating traffic signals. NTSA hopes that real-time notifications will prompt drivers to correct their behaviour immediately.

“Motorists are advised to observe all traffic regulations and respond promptly to any official notifications received,” the notice advises. The authority also promised to provide more information through official government channels as the system rolls out nationwide.

Experts believe the automated system will help reduce human error and corruption that sometimes occurs in traditional traffic enforcement. By automating fine issuance, the NTSA aims to make compliance more consistent and fair.

Drivers are encouraged to ensure their contacts are up to date with NTSA records, as notifications will be sent via SMS. The authority also urges everyone to treat the alerts seriously and pay fines promptly to avoid penalties or restrictions on accessing other services.

The Instant Fines System represents a major step in Kenya’s efforts to modernize road safety management. By combining technology with strict enforcement, NTSA hopes to see a reduction in traffic violations and improve overall road safety across the country.

The Director General, Usalama Baraban, concluded the notice by urging citizens to cooperate and comply: “Keep our roads safe.”
