NTV Presenters Criticised for Mocking 22-Year-Old Kenyan Environmentalist’s Guinness Record-Breaking Tree-Hugging Attempt

NTV’s Beatz & Buzz has come under fire after presenters Natalie Githinji, DJ Twinizzle and Laura Mbatha were accused of mocking a 22-year-old Kenyan environmentalist. During their Wednesday show, the trio questioned the value of Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hugging marathon, calling it a clout-chasing stunt with little meaningful impact.

The panel also ridiculed Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for visiting Muthoni, seemingly unaware that the activist was attempting the Guinness World Record inside the governor’s compound. Their comments sparked outrage online, with many accusing them of belittling a young environmentalist pursuing a noble cause.

“I think some of these things are just for fame. You can now see we are discussing her on Beatz & Buzz, a very big show,” one presenter said. Another added, “Is her life just worth a certificate? Where are her parents? If she were my sister, I would have told her she’s doing nonsense just to get recognized with a certificate. It’s like those DJs who played for 24 hours during Covid; what did it help them with?”

Truphena Muthoni is a Nyeri-based climate activist known for her record-breaking tree-hugging marathons. She uses the events to raise awareness about deforestation, mental health, and the protection of indigenous trees. Her journey began when she completed a 48-hour tree-hugging marathon at John Michuki Memorial Park. That effort highlighted how deeply she connects environmental protection to personal healing.

Environmentalists and online users criticized Beatz & Buzz for showing a lack of research and understanding about Muthoni’s cause. Many argued that the presenters’ remarks undermine youth-led climate action and discourage creative awareness campaigns. Supporters of Muthoni stressed that her dedication should inspire, not invite ridicule.

The controversy has reignited discussions about how mainstream media covers young activists. While the presenters defended their opinions as lively debate, critics say the comments crossed a line. Observers emphasize the need for responsible reporting and a deeper understanding of climate activism initiatives.
