The National Youth Service (NYS) has announced a change to its ongoing recruitment exercise for volunteers. The nationwide selection, originally scheduled from March 16 to March 21, has been adjusted following a government-declared public holiday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared Friday, March 20, a public holiday to mark the observance of the holy month. In response, NYS Commandant General James K. Tembur confirmed that all recruitment activities planned for that day would be postponed to Saturday, March 21. “Following the gazette notice issued by the Cabinet Secretary…all recruitment activities initially scheduled for Friday, March 20, have been rescheduled to Saturday, March 21, 2026,” he said.
All prospective candidates are advised to attend their designated recruitment centres on the new date. NYS emphasized that the adjustment ensures a smooth and orderly process. “We appreciate your understanding and continued commitment to service the nation,” the statement added.
The recruitment exercise is a crucial opportunity for young Kenyans to join the NYS and gain hands-on experience in national service. Applicants undergo physical, academic, and character assessments before final selection.
By moving the March 20 activities to the following day, NYS aims to prevent conflicts with the public holiday and give all candidates a fair chance to participate. Authorities are also using the change to streamline operations and maintain order at recruitment centres.
Prospective volunteers are urged to stay updated through official NYS channels and to prepare thoroughly for the rescheduled exercise. With the new date set for March 21, NYS hopes the process will proceed smoothly and provide a positive experience for all participants.
