ODM leader Oburu Odinga has promised to lead his supporters into a new era of growth. He said the journey to “Canaan” is still alive. However, it will now pass through Singapore. He used the phrase to describe Kenya’s push for development under President William Ruto.

Oburu spoke in Kisumu on Monday. The event took place at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo. It marked the release of NYOTA business funds. More than 8,000 young people from Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Siaya benefited. President Ruto attended the function.
The ODM boss said Kenya must change its economy. He said the Singapore model offers a good lesson. “Canaan is where we are going,” he said. “But to get there, we must pass through Singapore. That is how nations grow.”
He said the new working relationship between ODM and Ruto’s government is already helping Nyanza. He noted that projects are now flowing into the region. “Before, we were known for protests,” he said. “Now we are seeing roads, jobs, and youth programs.”
Oburu said development should not depend on politics. He insisted that Nyanza deserves equal treatment. “We pay taxes like every other Kenyan,” he said. “We must get our fair share of government resources.”
He also criticised leaders who use division to gain support. He said such politics hurt the country. “Some people want chaos,” he said. “But our people want progress and peace.”
Looking ahead to the 2027 election, Oburu pledged to support Ruto. He said ODM voters will back leaders who bring real change. “We will vote for those who deliver,” he said. “We will not follow empty promises.”
He used a vivid image to drive his message. “If you follow a fly, it will take you to filth,” he said. “But if you follow a bee, it will take you to honey. I will take you to Canaan.”
Oburu also honoured his late brother, Raila Odinga. He said Raila’s dream still guides ODM. “The vision of Canaan did not die with Raila,” he said. “We are only using a new road.”
He urged unity across the country. He said Kenya can grow if leaders work together. He said the future remains bright.
