Siaya Senator and ODM leader Oburu Oginga has travelled to Dubai for a short rest. It is his first trip outside Kenya since the death of his younger brother, Raila Odinga. The family says he needed time away to recover after weeks of emotional strain and heavy public commitments.

Relatives stepped in quickly as questions spread online. They urged the public to remain calm and allow him privacy. Ruth Odinga, the Kisumu Woman Representative, confirmed that Oburu travelled for only three days. She explained that the 81-year-old senator needed a break after handling intense family and party duties.
She said the death of Raila, who passed away on October 15 while receiving treatment in India, placed a huge burden on him. According to Ruth, Oburu stayed strong throughout the funeral period but needed time to breathe.
The clarification came as speculation increased on social media. An X account linked to Oburu posted a message to reassure supporters. It read, “Feeling grateful for good health and high spirits. Taking a short sabbatical to recollect, recharge, and reset.”
His son, Jaoko Oburu, reposted it to confirm that his father was well. The update eased tension among many who feared something was wrong. It also helped counter rumours that circulated shortly after news of his departure broke.
However, the trip carries emotional weight. It is Oburu’s first journey abroad after losing his brother, a national figure whose death shook the country. Oburu led the Odinga family through every step of the mourning period. He managed funeral arrangements, addressed supporters, and held the family together as grief spread nationwide. Those close to him say the pressure was overwhelming.
For now, Oburu is expected to stay in Dubai briefly as he rests. The family hopes he will return refreshed and ready to resume his political duties. They have asked Kenyans to support him by giving him space. They say the short break is necessary for him to regain strength. They also insist that his trip has no hidden motive and is simply a moment to heal.
