Oburu Presses Ruto Over Fishermen Arrests as President Unveils Major Development Projects for Migori

Senator Oburu Oginga on Thursday urged President William Ruto to act on security problems facing fishermen on Lake Victoria. He said a neighbouring country is arresting and torturing Kenyan fishermen. Oburu called for urgent diplomatic action to protect lives and livelihoods.

Speaking in Migori County, the Siaya senator said many fishermen die due to poor security. Others are detained across the border and mistreated. “Mr President, our fishermen need protection. Diplomacy must work so these arrests stop,” he said. He noted that Lake Victoria is a shared resource. Communities around the lake have lived together peacefully for generations.

Oburu also welcomed Ruto to Migori. He praised the president for promoting unity and development. He urged residents to embrace cooperation and highlighted the county’s cultural diversity.

President Ruto greeted locals in Dholuo. He reiterated his commitment to unity and inclusive growth. He recalled his partnership with the late Raila Odinga, focusing on leadership and development. Ruto said discrimination must end. He promised to fully integrate Migori into Kenya’s national development plan.

The president announced major projects for the county. A pier will be built at Muhuru Bay. A contractor is already in place, and it will be ready in eight months. Roads worth KSh1.7 billion, including Masara-Muhuru Bay Road, will start construction in January 2026. KSh350 million will go to a modern market in Muhuru Bay. Ruto said it will give women safe, clean spaces to trade. He added that Nyatike will be the starting point of change in Migori County.
