The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly advised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to avoid visiting Bondo in Siaya County, the late Raila Odinga’s hometown. The directive comes amid political tensions following controversial remarks by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, which party leaders criticized as divisive and disrespectful during Kenya’s period of mourning.
Speaking on Wednesday in Kisumu, ODM Kisumu Deputy Chairperson Seth Kanga, who also serves as Assembly Whip, warned that Gachagua’s proposed trip to Nyanza could provoke hostility. “We have been informed of Gachagua’s plans to visit the home of our late leader Raila Odinga. We urge him – please refrain from entering Bondo,” Kanga said, noting the need to maintain peace and respect in the region.
The warning follows a video that went viral showing Governor Kahiga implying that Raila’s death was “God’s plan” that had “leveled the political playing field,” favoring Mt. Kenya. Delivered in Kikuyu during a burial in Nyeri, Kahiga’s statements suggested that the late opposition leader’s alliance with President William Ruto had redirected government benefits, sparking national outrage.
ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga described the remarks as “insensitive, primitive and deeply disrespectful,” accusing Kahiga of mocking a leader who devoted his life to national unity and democratic values. She called for his immediate resignation as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), insisting, “The country deserves leaders who demonstrate empathy and respect, not divisive rhetoric.”
CoG Chair Ahmed Abdullahi distanced the council from Kahiga’s comments, stating they represented his personal opinions and not the organization’s stance. “We strongly condemn these statements, which were inappropriate and ill-timed, especially during this period of national mourning,” Abdullahi said.
Under mounting criticism, Governor Kahiga apologized and stepped down from his leadership role at CoG, acknowledging the controversy his words had generated.
The episode highlights the sensitivity surrounding Raila Odinga’s legacy and underscores potential political tensions in Nyanza, especially as leaders navigate public sentiment following the late opposition leader’s passing.
