ODM Disowns Activist Oketch Salah Amid Controversy Over Independent Grassroots Activities and Loyalty to Late Raila Odinga’s Legacy

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has disowned activist Oketch Salah. The party says his recent activities do not reflect its official position.

National Chairperson Gladys Wanga clarified that Salah is acting strictly in his personal capacity. “Any activities, statements, or engagements undertaken by Mr Oketch Salah do not represent or bind ODM in any way,” she said.

Wanga emphasized that all official party programs must go through proper channels. Grassroots leaders, members, and supporters are warned not to organise events without approval. The party stressed order, discipline, and structured engagement in pursuing its objectives.

Salah responded with his own statement. He reaffirmed his loyalty to ODM and the late Raila Odinga, known as “Baba.” “Everything I have done has one purpose: to strengthen and popularize ODM. I believe deeply in this party and what it stands for,” he said.

He offered an apology to Wanga for any offense caused. “If I hurt you, Chairlady Wanga, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention,” Salah added.

Despite the apology, he defended his vision for the party. “ODM must be re-energised and refreshed. A living movement must keep moving, inspiring, and reaching people at the grassroots,” he stated.

Salah also addressed concerns over funding. He said all resources he used were personal. “I have not asked ODM for money, nor used party funds. This is my personal contribution to a party I love and respect,” he said.

He highlighted his commitment to Baba’s legacy. “I promised Baba that I would stand with ODM. That promise has stayed with me. I remain ODM. I will continue to stand with the party out of love and respect,” he added.

The exchange highlights growing tensions within ODM. Leadership under Wanga insists on structured, approved activities. Salah champions independent activism and grassroots engagement. The dispute underscores the challenge of balancing party discipline with personal initiative in political movements.
