More than 3.4 million learners across Kenya began their 2025 national assessments on Monday. The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) mark another key milestone in the shift from the 8 – 4 – 4 system to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The exams will run until Wednesday, October 29.

Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok said the ministry is fully ready. He oversaw the opening of exam materials at the Kibra Deputy County Commissioner’s office. “We are pleased to announce that everything is in place,” he said. “This year, 1.1 million learners will sit the KJSEA before joining Grade 10.”
Bitok confirmed that the government has already released funds to support the exercise. He also urged teachers and invigilators to conduct the exams with honesty and professionalism. “Nobody should have excuses. We have enough resources and space for every learner,” he stated.
Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer David Njengere also expressed confidence in the process. He said the exams align with the CBC’s new structure, which combines both school-based and national assessments. “Learners in Grade 9 already have 40% of their marks from school work,” he said. “These exams will add the remaining 60%. We are ready to deliver credible results.”
Njengere added that all exam centers had been supplied with materials and trained personnel. He noted that close coordination between KNEC, teachers and administrators will ensure smooth operations.
The KPSEA and KJSEA follow closely after the KCSE exams, which began on October 21. The overlapping schedules highlight Kenya’s busy education calendar and the government’s effort to manage a seamless transition to the CBC.
Officials say this year’s exams reflect a new phase in Kenya’s education journey. With enhanced monitoring, clear structures and strong collaboration. The ministry hopes to deliver fair and transparent assessments that focus on skills, not just grades shaping the country’s next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
