Peru’s election season has taken a dangerous turn after presidential hopeful Rafael Belaunde survived a shooting attack. The incident happened in Cerro Azul, a small-town south of Lima. It immediately raised alarms about rising insecurity and political tension in the country.

Police say two attackers on a motorbike fired several bullets at Belaunde’s SUV. Three shots smashed the front window. Broken glass cut his face and shirt, leaving him bloodied but stable. Belaunde called the injuries minor. He then fired back with his own weapon.
Officers say he released at least twelve shots. No one was injured in the exchange.Belaunde, a former energy minister and grandson of ex-president Fernando Belaunde, reported no prior threats. His party called the attack a worrying sign.
They said Peru is already struggling with crime, corruption, and youth-led protests. They warned the campaign could face more violence if security is not tightened.Peru has seen rising extortion and deadly attacks in recent years. Bus drivers are frequent victims, with dozens killed for refusing to pay gangs. Analysts blame poverty, political turmoil, and expanding criminal groups.
Leading candidates Rafael López Aliaga and Keiko Fujimori condemned the attack. They urged authorities to act fast. They said Peru must protect all contenders as the country moves toward the 2026 election.
