“Political Competition Is Not Enmity”: Ruto Hails ODM as a Model for National Unity, Urges Dialogue

President William Ruto has praised the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for its resilience and national reach. Speaking at the party’s 20th-anniversary Founders Dinner in Mombasa, he said other parties in Kenya could learn from ODM’s success.

“I have come here to celebrate ODM as a strong party, not a briefcase party, not a regional party, but a national party,” he said. He highlighted that ODM rose above tribal and regional politics, remaining active and vibrant across the country.

Ruto said strong national parties are the foundation of democracy. He noted that ODM shows it is possible to build a movement based on ideology rather than division. He urged Kenyans to exercise political tolerance. “That’s how Mr Raila Odinga was able to work with Presidents Moi, Kibaki, Uhuru, and myself, even though we were competitors,” he said.

The President appealed to ODM leaders to preserve unity. He urged them not to allow internal disagreements to weaken the party. “I urge the people who now have the reins of the management of this party not to undermine the spirit of ODM,” he said. He described Odinga as a visionary who prioritized the country’s interests above all else.

ODM leaders, including Party Leader Oburu Oginga and Minority Leader Junet Mohammed, pledged to work with the broad-based government. They said cooperating ensures policies are implemented effectively, rather than resorting to protests. “All political parties aspire to be in government. Our party is not excluded. Working within the broad-based government is the smarter choice,” Oburu said.

Other leaders, including Governors Nyong’o and Wanga, and former CS Joho, stressed the importance of dialogue, unity, and partnerships. They noted that ODM’s 20-year journey is a story of resilience, born from the fight for justice and people-centred governance.

The leaders urged continued collaboration with like-minded parties. They said this approach would secure the country’s future and maintain ODM’s relevance for years to come.
