President Ruto Condemns Violent Disruption at Othaya Church, Calls for Peace in Worship Spaces

President William Ruto has condemned the violent attack on a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County, calling for respect and safety in places of worship. On Sunday, January 25, 2026, chaos erupted at ACK Witima Church when tear gas canisters were detonated inside the sanctuary while politicians, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, were attending service.

Gachagua described the incident as terrifying. “We were trapped in church, attacked with live bullets and tear gas. They even torched my vehicles,” he wrote, explaining that he and others had to flee through bushes to escape the smoke and bullets.

Speaking during a church service, President Ruto emphasized that politics must not invade sacred spaces. “We can practise politics and seek leadership, but church must remain a place of respect,” he said. “Let us not bring hatred, chaos, or political rivalry into our churches. They should remain places of peace and spiritual reflection.”

He further urged all security agencies to protect places of worship and prevent politically motivated disruptions. “Every Kenyan, regardless of position or belief, must honour God’s presence in our churches,” Ruto said, warning that such incidents threaten national unity and the freedom to worship freely.

Meanwhile, Gachagua has openly criticized the authorities. He accused the police, and by implication the government, of orchestrating the attack. He demanded that officers involved be arrested and prosecuted, warning that nationwide protests could follow if justice is not delivered.

The attack at ACK Witima has sparked widespread outrage. Citizens, political leaders, and church leaders have condemned the use of violence in a sanctuary. Observers say such incidents undermine public trust in law enforcement and threaten the sanctity of religious spaces.

As investigations continue, Ruto’s call for peace and protection in churches highlights the delicate balance between political activity and religious practice. The government faces mounting pressure to ensure security during worship services and hold perpetrators accountable.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that places of worship must remain safe havens. Leaders and citizens alike are being urged to respect these spaces and prevent political conflict from spilling into areas meant for prayer and reflection.
