President Ruto Proposes Death Penalty for Cocaine, Heroin Dealers to Stop Rising Drug Abuse in Kenya

President William Ruto wants the death penalty for dealers of hard drugs like cocaine and heroin. He says drugs have destroyed too many families. Kenya’s current laws, he adds, are too lenient and fail to stop traffickers.

The president announced the government is planning major changes to narcotics laws. Trafficking hard drugs will become a capital offence. Offenders could face execution. He criticised existing penalties. Some traffickers only pay fines as low as KSh1 million. “These fines trivialise crimes that ruin lives,” he said.

Ruto said the new laws will match the punishment to the damage caused. Dealers of illicit brews will have their vehicles and properties seized. Those trafficking hard drugs will face the death penalty. He urged Parliament to overhaul the laws fully. The goal is to curb hard drugs and illicit alcohol. “It will not be business as usual for drug dealers,” he said.

The president highlighted the injustice of traffickers rarely using the drugs themselves. Yet, other families suffer. He also called for a review of gambling laws. Betting has pushed many families into debt and depression. Ruto instructed the Ministry of Interior, NACADA and the Attorney-General’s office to act fast.

“We must say no to these vices,” President Ruto said. “Kenya must be a country of order. Families must be protected from drugs, alcohol and gambling.”

The proposed reforms mark a firm government stance. They aim to protect communities and young people. Lawmakers will debate the bill and ensure it fits Kenya’s constitution. Enforcement will be strict.
