Region on the Brink: Israel and US Escalate Strikes as Iran Vows Wider Retaliation

The Middle East is entering a dangerous new phase. Fresh Israeli airstrikes targeted sites inside Iran early Wednesday, only hours after Iranian missiles were launched toward Israel. The exchange marks one of the most intense escalations in recent years.

The United States confirmed it has carried out nearly 2,000 strikes since joining Israel’s operation over the weekend. American officials say the targets include missile systems and military infrastructure. Admiral Brad Cooper described the deployment as “the largest buildup by the US in the Middle East in a generation.” He said forces were hitting “all the things that can shoot at us.”

Iran responded with drone and missile attacks across the region. One drone strike caused a fire near the US consulate in Dubai, though no casualties were reported. Other projectiles targeted military-linked sites in Qatar and Bahrain. Tehran has warned it will impose heavy costs if attacks continue. A Revolutionary Guard commander said, “If it decides to hit our main centres, we will hit all economic centres in the region.”

Oil markets reacted quickly. Prices climbed amid fears that the Strait of Hormuz could be disrupted. President Donald Trump said the US Navy is prepared to escort tankers through the strategic waterway. He also declared that talks with Tehran were “too late,” adding that “just about everything’s been knocked out.”

Beyond Iran and Israel, the conflict is spreading. In Lebanon, Hezbollah launched rockets toward northern Israel. Israeli forces struck targets in Beirut’s southern districts in response. The United Nations reports growing displacement as civilians flee border areas.

Inside Tehran, daily life has changed. Traffic has thinned. Security forces patrol key intersections. Many residents remain indoors, fearing further bombardment.

Diplomatic calls for restraint continue, but military actions dominate headlines. Each strike invites retaliation. Each response widens the risk. With energy routes, regional stability and global security at stake, the conflict now stretches far beyond the initial battlefield.
